Rachel (hair loss caused by pregnancy)
“I had a really healthy pregnancy, and I also noticed my hair thicken and my skin glow. But this all changed when my daughter was born. I had a fairly stressful birth which resulted in a caesarean section and left me very tired, stressed and uncomfortable.
"The main focus of my attention was obviously my new baby but also the healing of my scar which got infected so it wasn’t until my sister noticed my thinning hair that I really started to notice more hair falling out than normal. I started to become really worried about the loss of hair, as I had never experienced anything like this before. As my hair thinned more and more, I had no option but to cut it short to try and thicken it up. It really affected my confidence.”
William (hair loss caused by a period of illness or stress)
“I always had a full head of strong healthy hair until after my 50th birthday when I started to notice it thinning and balding. I first noticed a patch about the size of a 5 pence piece on my crown, this was accompanied by shedding, then another patch the size of a 50 pence on the frontal hairline. Then, quite suddenly, I was horrified to see my hair noticeably coming out in clumps. When I showered it changed my appearance because so much was disappearing down the plughole in front of my eyes. My GP said that the hair loss may have been brought on by stress as I had had quite a few pressures at the time. As a person who had worn their hair shoulder length for years you can imagine what it did for my confidence. ”
Susan (hair loss caused by a period of illness or stress)
“I’d always had very fine hair and as I got older it became even thinner. Then I went on holiday recently and my hair started falling out in clumps before my very eyes. I put two stone on in weight and was advised by the doctor that it was down to a thyroid problem. Within a few weeks my hair was really bad – so much had fallen out that you could see my scalp through the little hair that I had left. My hair loss really bothered me and made me feel unattractive and generally a bit fed up. I tried wearing wigs occasionally to boost my confidence but was never particularly happy with the way they looked.”
